A little research

I haven't done nearly enough research like I should but here is what I know thanks to a wonderful friend Missy. (who, pain stakingly has researched ALL she can to have a better birth the next go-round. And congrats to her since she is expecting again!!)

Here are a list of reasons as to why I believe could have caused a c/s with Gemma:

-They gave me Pit. to even out my contractions and help make me dialate and progress. (for hours I wasn't dialating past a 2)
-I asked for an epidural probably a little to soon. I think I could have handled it a little while longer.

Here are the FACTS of that delivery the eventually lead to a c/s:

-I started running a fever
-Gemma was face down and they needed her to turn back around
-Gemma started showing signs of stress

I can't help but think that just maybe the pit. and early epidural could have played a factor in the outcome of this delivery.

The more I read the more I want a vbac. I just need to find out if there is an easier way to get to that point instead of all the driving I might have to do. Also, I've realized that I should be more concerned with what I want and not stressing about how to make it easier for everyone else. Now, I need to come up with a plan. A plan where I know Vance will be there. This is the hard part that I find myself getting overwhelmed with. So, I guess I should do some praying and consulting.

By the way, this Thursday the 21st, I find out what I'm having! I can't wait!!

I can't wait for you to find out what you are having!

I haven't had a c-section, so I haven't researched VBACs much, BUT in regards to your question if things go back to normal "down there" with a vaginal birth...they do :) I had an episiotomy with Payton and things were fine after it healed. I did pee my pants once from laughing so hard a few days after delivery though :) Some women that to kegels often don't have a problem with that though. I won't go TMI on you in this comment but if you have any other questions of a vaginal birth let me know!

Good luck deciding either way. You are right, you've got to do what's best for you!

Hey Heather. I just wanted you to know, I had a c-section with my first and a vbac with my second, and everything went great. I also was put on pitocin with my first, and even though they warned my my pelvis was small, I'm pretty sure that's what caused me to have c-section with my boy. He was only 6 lbs. 12 oz. but he flipped face up after I was induced. Anyway, I don't know how big your kids are, and that can play into tearing, but my vbac went very well and the recovery was awesome, and there were no umm... "after complications" shall we say? No peeing the pants, and no differences, and compared to a c-section, seriously almost no pain. But then again, my kids are tiny. I also don't have the drive to consider. I did a TON of reading with both of my pregnancies, and I know you've already had one kid, but I did just as much reading with my second, because I was going through what you're going through and I desperately wanted a vbac, especially since I couldn't hold my boy if I had c-section, and i didn't want him to feel replaced. Anyway, there's a lot of good info out there, and it is a really personal decision, but I think a mother's instincts, guided by medical consultation, really plays a big role. Trust your instincts, and keep doing what you're doing. Pray, read, and seriously, make sure you're informed and no one is telling you what to do! Oh, and a good read on making it easier to try a vbac is "What to expect when your expecting." It addresses pretty much every topic and every possibility. If you have any questions, let me know! Good luck!

Sis as you know I have had both.

Having a vbac is one of the things that I believe every mother should experience at least once, AND without any epidural. There is something wonderful and almost sacred about bringing one of Heavenly Fathers children into this world. It is the most intense pain that you will ever experience but it is a pain that you can not remember as soon as the baby is here. Being completely aware of your body during the process is amazing.

You are right, an epidural will slow the labor process. That is something your doctor should have told you.

I know that you have delt with Kidney Stones and handled the pain quite will. I am sure that is comparable to labor. You can do it.

If I were you I would find a doctor in Tucson that would schedule you to be enduced. If you where scheduled to be enduced Vance could still schedule time off.

One thing to take into consideration when weighing your options is the ride to Sierra Vista and then onto Tucson. Will they be prepared to take care of any complications that could arise during the long transport? Remember that with Gemma the deciding factor was that her little heart was starting to show signs of stress.

I am sure that Vance's biggest issue with a vbac is the chance that he would not be there when you went into labor and would not be able to be reached in the field. That is a ligitimate concern.

Like you said, don't worry about family. We will be there no matter how that baby comes. Tucson is a pretty big place and they have hotels.

Ultimitely the decision is yours and I know that Vance will support you in whatever you decide. That support may come with a little resistance but if would be support nonetheless.

Remember to make this a matter of prayer. Father knows your heart and what you should do in this matter.

Love a Tons.

Here's a little of what I think. The reason you were not dilating probably is because she wasn't engaged in the birth canal. I pit of course would not have helped in that situation. Vance was the same exact way. I went into labor before I should have (the result of a moron nurse) but anyway his head was not engaged and labor went on and off for 3 days. Thank goodness they didn't give me anything especially pit because that would have worsened things. I'm sure it only put stress on Gemma from the severe contractions and not having them do any good. Another thing I am thinking is the less intervention by your doctor the better. If your doctor with Gemma had any imagination he would have known she wasn't engaged in the birth canal and should have never given pit. He would have had you up walking around and doing things to move her. And that information, checking the position of her would/should have been the first thing he should have done. Let us know what you decide. We'll pray for a decision.

love you
